‘The Shack’ by William P Young

I have been given an assignment by my boss at work, Footprints Christian Bookshop. Probably the best place to work, if you don’t get tired of looking at Christian books all day. The new book by William P Young ‘The Shack’ sold out on Amazon.com after just a week. It is set to be better selling than even ‘The Purpose Driven Life’, if that were possible. I will be busy reading the next day or so, so I thought the best idea would be, rather than think up a post that I spend less than 10 minutes on, I’d write a book review. I have heard it to be quite controversial, especially when dealing with the Trinity, making some Christians scared of it (!).
If you have any questions about the book I’ll be doing a Q&A post on Friday, separate to the review. If you’d like a question answering about it (without having to read the book yourself!) or would just like my opinion on a certain part of it, just leave a comment to this post. I’ll be back.

Interesting….I’ve heard about it but haven’t read it yet. I know the iMonk blogged about it and liked it a lot.
I think an interesting question to address is in an allegorical, fictional story type christian book, how much do they have to follow “Systematic Theology”. Some of the critical reviews I read seem to be grading as if it were an Intro to Theology textbook.
how much poetic license can you have and not be heretical?
What a great job you have. I look forward to your review.
I wrote one today

Thanks for the link Robin, it seems you did a good job. Chad, I think that is the biggest question surrounding the book from what I’ve read. I feel a lot of people are being nit-picky with a book over factual issues when it is written as fiction. But I can see their concern, I’ll be addressing that in the Q&A.

While this book brought me to tears and has a biblical flavor, it promotes a universal
religion and does not follow the narrow
road Jesus taught in God’s Word. I would
not recommend it to unbelievers and christians who cannot discern truth
from fiction.
