Belief in aliens and Christianity?

There’s an interesting discussion going on at Theologica about alien life. Can Christians believe in aliens without compromising their faith? The Vatican seems to take the position that the topic is ‘open’, meaning the bible doesn’t speak for or against it and so is open for debate. And I’d have to agree with them… there’s no point in believe anti-Catholic for the sake of it, I think they actually got something right! I don’t believe alien life is incompatible with the Christian faith. I think these are the best reasons why:

1. Although the bible doesn’t mention God creating aliens, this does not mean He didn’t or couldn’t.
This is because the bible was written so that we could know Gods dealings with mankind, especially in relation to salvation and to be equipped ‘for every good work’. This means that although it is true, it is not exhaustive truth. The bible doesn’t mention that the earth revolves around the sun or that it is round, but it is true.

2. Gods salvation plan in Jesus Christ only involve humans, and so wouldn’t need to be included in the salvation plan.
This means that it does not necessarily apply to aliens as well, just like Jesus didn’t have to die for your dog… because your dog didn’t sin and he wasn’t human with a soul that needs redeeming. Aliens could just be animals living on another planet without souls/spirits.

3. God can do whatever He wants, even without telling us.
God doesn’t have to tell us everything He gets up to. This can be seen whenever we get glimpses into heaven in the bible… it seems like a lot of activity going on behind the scenes but God doesn’t give us all the details, He doesn’t have to.

4. The bible doesn’t contradict the belief in aliens, leading us to believe that opinions on alien life are ‘open’.
Bluntly put, if the bible doesn’t contradict belief in something, it remains ‘open’ for debate.

Then again I don’t have any reason at all to believe in aliens because there just isn’t any public empirical evidence for them. It’s mainly conspiracy theorists that advocate it, not scientists working with the data. So, don’t let anyone tell you you can’t believe in Christianity and aliens… but don’t get carried along with conspiracy theorys that have little evidence for them.

You can see the Theologica forum post here.

What do you think? Can you find anything in the bible that would lead to you believe for or against the existence of alien life? Are you a ‘believer’?
