Walking with Jesus… literally!

I went for a little adventure today. It’s a bank holiday (a national holiday in England where all the banks close), so I decided I’d do something a bit different. Giving myself 3 hours I tried to see how far out of town I could get on foot. Here’s what I got up to:

Welcome to Darlington

This is a sign leading into Darlington (where I live). My first stop taking about an hour to get here. I tried to take a route I’d never been down before without a map just to make it a bit more interesting. It took longer than I expected… I ran into a lot of dead ends on the way but I got there in the end.

Motorway into Town

After that I got to the main road that leads into town from the south. Since I live in the north-east, there really isn’t that much else north of where I live… apart from Scotland ;) . But we don’t get many scots coming down to visit, it’s usually the other way round.

Sign to Darlington

Here’s a sign showing the way to Darlington. As you can see, you don’t get a lot of choice. The only other big town around is Teesside which is in the same direction, but a bit further. They have an airport though.

Nettle Field

Things got a bit trickier after that because I got to the country side. This meant I had to go through a field of nettles and long grass. It took a lot longer than I expected because I kept getting stung. But I guess that’s my fault :) .

County Border

I finally reached North Yorkshire, which is another county south of Darlington. It was a good moment as it made me feel I’d come a long way. This is about 2 hour in. I guess it’s the equivalent in America of going over a state border?

A Field

This is the furthest I got. There really wasn’t anywhere else to go as you couldn’t follow the road anymore (without getting run over). And the only place to go was over a fence into a field. This wouldn’t be very legal to the best of my knowledge as it’s trespassing. And I’d probably ruin the crops as I walk all over them. I think I better try a different route next time.

I know what you’re thinking… what has this got to do with theology? Well, it seems to me that Jesus liked to have a break once in a while. Solitude. Peace. Quiet. A time to get away from the business of His life and ministry, and just spend time with God. A time to reflect, pray and relax away from the pressures of civilized society. After all, wasn’t that what the sabbath was all about? Let’s have a day off every once in a while!

As they say, ‘if it’s good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for me!’

    Steve,

No, no lakes… I don’t take the bible that literally ;) . Would make a good photo though, wouldn’t it? :)

With God, all things are possible. With photoshop, all things _appear_ possible.
