I remember reading the trilogy as an adolescent. I checked it out from the library and had no notion of the controversy.
Even as an adolescent it seemed obvious that Pullman had just 180′d everything as a literary device. God was bad, Satan was good, etc. It was not convincing as it had no evidence or argumentation, just a “suppose it was really this way” kind of thing. Since it still presupposes that God exists and twists the understanding of Him that we get from the primary source material without any evidence for the change, I don’t think it is much of an argument for atheism
The Internet Monk had an interesting post on Pullman….(http://www.internetmonk.com/archive/sexual-freedom-pullmans-atheism-and-christian-humanism)
